One of the most inspiring, dynamic and charismatic ensembles on the music scene, the Atrium Quartet has established itself as performers of deep emotion, intellect, virtuosity and technical genius. Highly acclaimed by audiences and the press, the Quartet has performed throughout Europe, Russia, the United States, Australia, Japan and Brazil.
The Atrium Quartet has won two of the most prestigious international string quartet competitions: First Prize and Audience Prize at the 9th London International String Quartet Competition in 2003 and Grand Prize at the 5th Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition in 2007. Founded in 2000 in St. Petersburg under the inspiration of Professor Josef Levinson, the Quartet graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 2003 and completed its training as a quartet in residence in Amsterdam under Professor Stefan Metz at the Netherland String Quartet Academy and at the Hochschule fur Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin with Professor Eberhard Feltz. The Quartet has also been coached by renowned musicians from the Alban Berg Quartet, Vermeer Quartet, Marc Danel.
Recent highlights for the Atrium Quartet include recitals at the Wigmore Hall, the Royal Festival Hall in London, the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., the Frick Collection in New York, Les Invalides in Paris, BOZAR in Brussels, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, De Doelen in Rotterdam, deSingel in Antwerp, the Conservatoire de Genève, Palau Musica Catalana and L’Auditori in Barcelona, Philharmonic Hall and Mariinsky Concert Hall in St. Petersburg, Toppan Hall and Oji Hall in Tokyo as well as recitals in prestigious festivals such as Beethovenfest, Schleswig-Holstein Festival, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival, Schwetzingen Festival in Germany, Colmar, Festival du Lubéron in France, Orlando, Grachtenfestival in the Netherlands, Haydn International Festival in Eszterhaza in Hungary, Davos and Luzern Festivals in Switzerland.
The Quartet has performed with such eminent musicians as violist Richard Young of the Vermeer Quartet, pianists Brigitte Engerer and Jean-Bernard Pommier, and cellist Antonio Meneses.
Teaching became another important part of the Quartet’s activities. Members of the Atrium Quartet have shared their experience with young musicians from the UK, the USA, Brazil and Russia. From 2012 to 2015, the quartet was the quartet in residence at the Sunflower Music Festival in Topeka, USA.
The Atrium Quartet’s discography includes a CD with works by Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich made for EMI Classics and a “Live in Concert” DVD in the Netherlands with music by Tchaikovsky. The quartet’s next major project is a cycle of 15 quartets by D. Shostakovich. In October 2016, the German label Profil Edition Günter Haenssler released a new CD of the quartet with the early string quartets of Tchaikovsky and Brahms recorded on all-gut strings with a low tuning of 430Hz.
The members of the quartet play on unique instruments made by Italian luthiers.
