Musée des Arts décoratifs et du Design

Located in the heart of Bordeaux, in an elegant late 18th-century townhouse emblematic of Bordeaux’s UNESCO World Heritage cityscape, the Musée des Arts décoratifs et du Design will reopen in April 2026 following an extensive renovation that began in January 2023.

Housed in the Hôtel de Lalande, the museum has preserved the intimate and refined atmosphere of this historic residence. From room to room, visitors discover an outstanding collection of 17th-, 18th- and 19th-century furniture and decorative objects. The original wood paneling, decorative schemes and parquet floors are particularly remarkable, offering an immersive experience into the art of living of past centuries.

Alongside its permanent collection, madd-bordeaux presents an ambitious program of temporary exhibitions dedicated to decorative arts and design. Special attention is given to the art of the table — central to Bordeaux’s cultural identity — as well as to contemporary design practices that explore the aesthetic, social and environmental transformations of our time.

Conceived as a 21st-century museum, madd-bordeaux is both a guardian of heritage and a vibrant cultural space: a platform for emerging talent, open to artists and designers invited to exhibit, experiment and engage in dialogue with the public. A window onto the world and a mirror of its transformations, the museum highlights the role of design in making visible the changes shaping our society.

The renovation project, led by the City of Bordeaux with the support of the French State, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region and a private patron, includes the restoration and rehabilitation of the former adjoining prison as well as energy upgrades to the Hôtel de Lalande.
