Conference-Concert: The string quartet in film music.

What better place than the Utopia cinema to evoke the presence of the string quartet in the 7th art?

Benoît Basirico proposes to explore the history of cinema by noting the different musical presences of the string quartet, while asking questions about its role and its contribution to the stories it illustrates. From thrillers to romances, from comedies to historical films, the screening of extracts from emblematic films will illustrate the large place that cinematographic fiction has given to string quartets.

Following this conference, the four French members of the young Agate Quartet, already renowned for the precision of their interpretations, will offer a high definition reading of Mozart and Debussy. The first of the quartets dedicated to Joseph Haydn, the Quartet K. 387 contains both gallant melodies and surprisingly modern elements, right up to the apotheosis of its virtuoso finale. As for Debussy’s only quartet, it is a work in Technicolor at the crossroads of imaginary worlds: one hears melodies from the depths of time, gypsy accents, Hispanic tints, impressionist touches…
