A beautiful ellipse, silence is music…
The Ellipse Quartet was born of a friendship between four musicians from the Orchestre National de France. Winners of several competitions, including the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition, they are regular guests on France Musique and perform at numerous festivals in France (Bordeaux, Cunault, Toulouse, Festival de Radio France Montpellier, etc.) and abroad.
The orchestra has left its mark on the Quatuor Ellipse. Constantly nourished by their musical experiences with great conductors (Bernard Haitink, Kurt Masur, Seiji Ozawa, Emmanuel Krivine, Daniele Gatti, Valeri Gerghiev, Ricardo Mutti, David Zinman, Semyon Bychkov…) and ‘bathed’ in the sound of the orchestra, the members of the Ellipse Quartet tackle all types of repertoire, with a definite taste for French music.
Passionate, they are relentless in their quest for colour, density, sound planes and the composer’s soul, a work of goldsmithery. Curious, they don’t hesitate to venture off the beaten track. They take part in projects such as the fiction concerts on France Culture and play alongside David Krakauer, the great clarinettist of klezmer music.
They recorded their first album in 2018 on Ad Vitam Records, devoted to Saint-Saëns, Debussy and Lekeu, to critical acclaim (Classica Four Stars).
