Transposing the power, variety, and hypnotic pull of an electro live set with a group of five acoustic musicians\u2014that\u2019s the experiment Cabaret Contemporain has been pursuing since 2012. In the heat of the moment, it takes on a new shape at every performance, as has happened at all the festivals that have invited them (Nuits Sonores or Siestes \u00c9lectroniques in France, Rewire in the Netherlands, Dancity in Italy, etc.).<\/p>\n

This feat of strength and dexterity is performed on instruments (guitar, drums, piano, two double basses) prepared using their own methods, restoring the energy of dance music through sheer physical effort.<\/p>\n

In the past, they\u2019ve collaborated with \u00c9tienne Jaumet or Ch\u00e2teau Flight. Today, they return with their own compositions and a new live show that confirm their reputation as a \u201cgiant drum machine\u201d and bear the mark of their inspirations: Kraftwerk, Jeff Mills, Four Tet, and James Holden.<\/p>\n

In recent years, the music scene has seen many encounters between acoustic and electronic music, sometimes at the risk of falling into a rather ponderous routine. The field needed a breath of fresh air, and that\u2019s where Cabaret Contemporain stepped in. Far from worn-out hybrids between academic music and the dancefloor, their sound has everything of electro except the method of production, and it\u2019s this fertile, independent furrow that the group has been plowing for four years.<\/p>\n

Over those four years, Cabaret Contemporain has crisscrossed venues and festivals, a circuit on which they honed their live impact and asserted their identity through unique performances. At Nuits Sonores, Siestes \u00c9lectroniques, Art Rock, or Days Off in France; at Rewire in the Netherlands; and at Dancity or Expo15 in Milan, Italy, the group\u2019s many projects have offered a new way of seeing and hearing electronic music\u2014meticulous yet physical. Often described as a \u201cgiant drum machine,\u201d the five musicians take to the stage with instruments pre-modified according to their own methods. Their toolbox contains as many screwdrivers as jam jars, and that\u2019s how guitar, drums, piano, and two double basses are tampered with, even pushed to their limits.<\/p>\n

In this marathon of power and precision, a sense of risk collides with mechanical rigor, improvisational surges with compositional exactness. The experience is reinvented at every new date and follows unexpected paths depending on the moment\u2019s impulse. Overseen by a dedicated sound engineer\u2014the true sixth member of Cabaret Contemporain\u2014this frenzy echoes the marathon performances of DJs, translated through the endurance of instrumentalists: a practice born of minimalism that hits like techno. Sometimes joined by major names in electro such as \u00c9tienne Jaumet or Ch\u00e2teau Flight (Gilb\u2019r and I:Cube from the Versatile label), the group has juggled the DNA of pioneers like Kraftwerk or Terry Riley to offer a trance-driven, sweat-soaked reinterpretation of their repertoires, beyond the old machine\/instrument divide.<\/p>\n

Alongside their extensive touring, which has made them a true live phenomenon, the members of Cabaret Contemporain worked privately for six months to translate three years of live brilliance onto record. The result is this self-titled work, their first based on original compositions: seven shimmering, luminous tracks of heightened musicality, where the density of textures merges with rhythmic interplay and where the origin of each sound can never be identified with certainty. The moods are shifting, with menacing edges here (\u201cLa Biche\u201d), glimmers of nostalgia there (\u201cLove\u201d), or elsewhere openings onto the strange (\u201cThe Sun Is Shining In The Dark Night\u201d). It\u2019s a work poised between hypnosis and power, playing with the colors and dynamics of dance music, and aligning itself with artists like Four Tet, Voices From The Lake, James Holden, or Daphni\/Caribou. These are affinities Cabaret Contemporain readily claims, having signed to the Berlin electro\/experimental label M=Minimal (distributed by the German techno heavyweight Kompakt) and having their single \u201cUne Des Deux\u201d remixed by Arnaud Rebotini, a prominent figure on the club scene.<\/p>\n
